Homemade disinfecting wipes

A recent article by My Heavenly Recipes provides folk with a great way to make at-home disinfecting wipes. Although this recipe calls for a few hard to find items, many homes may find they already have what’s needed.

  1. Place your cut paper towels into a glass jar or empty container of Clorox/Lysol wipes

Home Inspections: Mold Testing for NH Homebuyers

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Home Inspections: Mold Testing for NH Homebuyers

mold testing NH

If you’ve ever gone through the process of purchasing a home, you know that mold testing in NH is part of the initial inspection.  Here at Purely Green Environmental, we were recently contacted by a local realtor in regards to our mold testing services.  The conversation led to an interesting eye-opener.

When asked how long our inspection would take, the realtor was dumbfounded at our response of approximately two hours for a small to mid-sized home.  Because of this reaction, the team at Purely Green came to realize that many potential homeowners are entrusting their inspections to companies that are not taking the time to inspect the home thoroughly.  Thus, we decided that this month’s article would highlight the importance of these inspections and what you should look for when hiring a company for mold inspection.

Air and surface testing

There are certain elements that every inspection should touch upon when testing for mold.  However, we found that several companies are sampling the air and not taking surface samples.  It’s imperative to examine both elements to determine effective mold remediation protocols.  At Purely Green Environmental, our team will perform an in-depth inspection using testing equiptment.  This process can be time-consuming, depending on the size of the home and initial findings.  Any elevated mold or moisture levels that may be found will slow the process down as our team will take the time to focus on areas that raise a red flag.

Unbiased reporting

Another critical feature to obtaining accurate results is to choose a company that provides you with an unbiased reporting.  By this, we mean a company that tests and sends out their samples for further evaluation.  Sample analysis conducted by a reputable and experienced third-party will ensure you results that are honest and put your best interests at the forefront.

Furthermore, you’ll want to choose a company that offers testing, not remediation.  Although at first it will seem time-efficient to hire a one-stop company; you could be faced with a conflict of interest.  At Purely Green Environmental, our team will provide you with an inspection report that details your air quality and the specific details for how to solve the uncovered problems.  However, we are not a mold remediation or sanitizing company.

Follow-up inspection

When hiring a company that provides assessments and not remediation services, you’ll be hiring a company that cares about the final result. As an additional service to our customers, the team at Purely Green Environmental will schedule a follow-up inspection. This will provide an honest response to the accuracy of the remediation process.  In at least 70% of cases, hired remediation companies will need to return as testing fails.

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Got Mold? Understanding the Basics of Mold Remediation

If you’re not familiar with mold remediation, this article is for you, especially if you have mold in your home.  Often ignored, or unnoticed, mold can cause several adverse reactions in your home, causing structural damage and illness.  Here at Purely Green Environmental, our team of experts can assist with mold remediation in NH and MA.  This article will provide you with a better understanding of causes and solutions when it concerns mold.

nh mold remediationWhat causes mold?

Although there are many different reasons for mold to grow, the main ingredient is moisture or water within the home.  Often found in basements, mold can grow in visible as well as hidden locations.  For example, if you’ve had a flood in the basement and water was left behind, you may start smelling a musty odor.  Cracks in the foundation are another common way that water will make its way into your home.

However, older homes with uneven windows are also a prime target for mold growth.  Without adequate sealing, rain and melting ice and snow can easily enter the home.  Furthermore, if your walls are adorned with wallpaper, you most likely have a double issue.  Often water will lie behind the wallpaper allowing mold to grow in disguise.

What does mold remediation mean?

Simply stated, mold remediation is the professional way of saying mold removal.  However, there is more to the process then many people realize.

What is the process behind remediation?

The first step to NH mold remediation is the assessment.  Not only will a team of professionals perform a visual evaluation, but samples will also be taken.  These samples will help to determine the type of mold and the levels of its presence.

Once the type of mold has been identified, experts can then create a plan of action to remove problem areas effectively.  However, depending on the kind of mold, different measures of isolation may be required to safely disrupt the laying mold spores.

Following mold removal, within 48 hours, your mold remediation company should return to provide another assessment.  This last assessment will let you know if the treatment was effective.  Once the mold has been safely removed from the home, clean up and repair of damaged areas can take place.

If you think there may be a presence of mold in your home, it’s time to consider contacting our team at Purely Green Environmental.  We provide mold remediation to NH and MA homes, ensuring the safety of your home and your family.  Visit us online or call us toll-free at (888) 291-3773 for more information.

How Can I Tell if There’s Mold in My Home?

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on How Can I Tell if There’s Mold in My Home?

mold testing Manchester NH

This question is one of the most frequently asked questions here at Purely Green Environmental. Because different types of mold are more hazardous than others, it’s imperative to know the answer. This article covers a few ways that homeowners, or renters, can determine if there is mold in the home. However, for an accurate determination, mold testing in Manchester, NH, and other towns, by a professional company is always the safest, and most precise solution.

Eyes Wide Open

One of the easiest ways to determine if you have a mold issue is to look around. Even if there isn’t evident mold growth, there are other signs to be cautious of. For example, excess moisture is the beginning of an ugly path if left untreated. Looking for water leaks, standing water, condensation, or staining on the ceiling is an indication that your home may need professional evaluation.
Any sort of water indoors can lead to potentially problematic health concerns for both you, your family, and pets. Immediate attention and resolution should be taken to remove molds and their source promptly.

Noses Clear

Another obvious sign that there is mold growth within your residence can be a musty smell. Although common in basement areas, it’s crucial to remember that every area of the home can be a source of mold growth. For instance, under the kitchen sink and bathrooms are extremely popular areas for water issues.
If you smell an earthy or musty odor in your home, assume there is mold growing somewhere. Inspect areas that are exposed to water and have carpet, lifting floor tiles, and wallpaper. Often, water can penetrate through a surface area and harbor mold out of eyes sight.

Making unhealthy buildings enviro-healthy and mold-free is our specialty. If you think there is mold in your home or business, contact the team at Purely Green Environmental. Wallpaper Can Be a Source of Toxic Mold

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Wallpaper Can Be a Source of Toxic Mold

toxic mold in MassachusettsDid you know an estimated 40 percent of American buildings, including at least 25 percent or more of all homes, are believed to be affected by toxic mold in Massachusetts?1 Some of the mycotoxins produced by molds can be more problematic than pesticides and heavy metals even, in part because their concentration can be far larger, but also because they tend to affect more biological systems than pesticides and heavy metals do.2

Is Your Wallpaper Making You Sick?

Researchers are warning that wallpaper can be a significant source of fungi that contribute to air pollution and sick building syndrome. The study3 in question discovered three types of fungi common in household wallpaper: Penicillium brevicompactum, aspergillus versicolor, and stachybotrys chartarum.

These three fungi are also common food contaminants. When these fungi grow in wallpaper (or elsewhere), their mycotoxins can quickly spread into the air and dust.

The Toxic Roots of Many Illnesses

One of the difficulties with molds is that they can affect many types of surfaces. They can also aggravate just about any health problem you already have.

Any area with over 60 percent humidity will lead to the growth of mold and bacteria. This explains why wallpaper and its glue backing is a suitable host for these deadly microbes.

Gram-negative bacteria, which grow with mold, are particularly dangerous. They die and release their cell walls, referred to as lipopolysaccharides or endotoxins. Endotoxins can severely exacerbate asthma and other inflammatory conditions.

Common Symptoms of Mold Exposure

Common health problems attributed to poor and potentially toxic indoor air quality courtesy of mold growth include but are not limited to the chart below. If you have any of these issues, it may be worthwhile to consider the indoor air quality of your home.

How to ID a Mold Problem

How do you know whether hidden mold might be posing a health risk? The first step would be to conduct a visual inspection. If you can’t see any visible traces of mold, take surfaces samples anyway and use a moisture meter to determine the moisture level in the area.

Wood flooring should have a maximum moisture content of 10 to 12 percent. Anything above that is a breeding ground for mold. Exterior walls should not have a moisture content above 10 percent. You need to identify the mold itself, and not just look for spores in the air.

One of the best options is to hire Purely Green Environmental for a complete and thorough mold inspection. They pay attention to details and that is required for the best outcomes.

Is It Safe to Clean Mold on Your Own?

If all you have is a small area of surface mold, you probably don’t have to call in an expert. However, only attempt to clean it if it’s limited to the surface of a small area. Any deep-rooted mold will require professional assistance. An often cited recommendation is to kill off mold with bleach or ammonia. Do NOT do this.

Instead, for minor visible surface mold, first wipe the area with straight white vinegar. Mix a couple of tablespoons of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) into a quart of water, and scrub off any surface residue of the mold. You could also use an ozone generator to help rid the air of any mold spores.

In today’s world, there are dangers everywhere.  One place that should always be safe is your home.  Unfortunately, there can be hidden dangers there as well! Black mold, or Stachybotrys Chartarum, is a toxic mold commonly found in homes that are not adequately ventilated or have water leakage.  Symptoms of black mold poisoning can range depending on the severity and length of exposure. How confident are you that your home is safe? Purely Green Environmental can test for black mold in Groton, MA as well as surrounding areas.  Focusing on creating a greener, healthier environment for people, Purely Green Environmental can assist in eliminating pollutants in your home.

The Environment

The number one causing element of mold growth is moisture.  Therefore, any space in the home that is exposed to water is a candidate for potential mold growth.  The most susceptible areas include basements, crawlspaces, bathrooms, and kitchens. Once black mold begins, spores are released into the air then attaching themselves to drywall, carpets, insulation, and sub-flooring.

Most Common Ailments

Although symptoms of black mold highly depend on the length of exposure, the following are a few of the most common.  In general, ailments from black mold are involved with the respiratory systems.  Chronic coughing or sneezing, irritated eyes, nose and throats, rashes, headaches, and even chronic fatigue can all be signs of mold in the home.  Prolonged exposure to black mold is more dangerous.  Symptoms can increase in severity and expand to hearing loss, blurry vision, and in some cases, the development of cancer.

Be Proactive

Black mold tends to have a distinct odor.  If you notice a strong, musty smell in your home along with unusual symptoms, be sure to contact a professional immediately.  Having your home tested right away will not only keep your family safe but save a potentially costly removal process from occurring.  In addition, having proper ventilation throughout the home is essential.  Vents should all be linked to the exterior of the house.  Professional waterproofing services are also available for areas such as the basement.
